Carp-care products are often mandatory at fisheries, and some anglers claim to have seen fish with healed wounds years after treatment. However, Chris is skeptical of these anecdotal reports. He emphasizes the need for robust data, stating, "Observations of healed wounds are not sufficient evidence. A controlled study comparing treated and untreated fish is necessary to determine the true impact of carp-care formulas."
The study's findings challenge the industry's focus on killing bacteria and infection. Chris points out that carp are resilient creatures with robust immune systems. In clean environments, sealing and healing wounds are more critical than combating infection. He adds, "I've never encountered an infected wound on a fish, and proper diagnosis should be left to veterinary professionals."
A Call for Action
Chris and Omar's research is not meant to incite panic or blame individual companies. They aim to raise awareness and engage with policymakers, regulatory agencies, and legislators. They believe that collaboration between scientists and industry stakeholders is crucial.
"We want to work with companies to develop a standard testing procedure for carp-care products," Chris says. "Our study provides a foundation for this, and we have the expertise, resources, and workforce to make a difference."
The team is already collaborating with the IFM and Angling Trades Association (ATA) to establish an approved standard. They are developing a solution that will replace the ineffective products currently on the market, ensuring a phased transition to safer alternatives.
